In tanka, the first three lines follow the haiku pattern (though in our example Turco varies the pattern by using seven syllables in line 1). The last two lines of the tanka are traditionally composed of seven syllables each. Japanese poets would often pair up and write a tanka together. One poet would write the first three lines (the haiku), and the other poet would compose two closing lines to cap it. No form better illustrates poetry’s communicative mechanism, its friendliness to dialogue.

Collaborative Exercise

Pair up with a friend and compose six tanka poems. Alternate positions, writing the first three lines, then the two lines that cap the poem. What does it tell you about different sensibilities and points of view? What does it teach about balance?
